How often should I check my dog's or cat's dental health?

Why is dental hygiene so important for pets?

Oral health is an essential but often neglected part of your pet's wellbeing. Tartar build-up, gingivitis or untreated dental infections can cause pain, tooth loss and problems with vital organs such as the heart and kidneys.

Recommended frequency and warning signs

Professional veterinary check-up:
A dental check-up is recommended at least once a year. In small breeds or older animals, it may be necessary to do this every 6 months.

Home care:

  • Brush their teeth with specific products 2-3 times a week.
  • Use dental snacks or rinses approved by your vet.
  • Watch for signs such as bad breath, red gums, excessive salivation or difficulty eating.

In our veterinary practice we carry out complete dental check-ups and advise you on the best preventive care according to the age, species and breed of your companion.

What does a professional dental cleaning include?

  • Assessment of oral status.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning to remove tartar.
  • Dental polishing.
  • Extractions if there is serious damage.
  • Screening under sedation for a safe examination.
