When internal medicine is indicated and what tests/services can complement it

The veterinary internal medicine is indicated when there are symptoms that require a global approach (digestive, respiratory, urinary, endocrine, weight loss, malaise, recurrent fever) or when a disease requires monitoring and adjustments in the medium/long term. At Benivet Benissa we start with a clinical history and complete examination and, if the cause needs to be confirmed or the evolution needs to be controlled, we indicate tests only when they provide useful information:

Veterinary practice in BenissaInitial assessment, complete examination and definition of the diagnostic plan.

Blood tests y urinalysisBasis for assessment of general condition, inflammation, liver/kidney function, metabolic disturbances and treatment management.

Coprological tests / stool analysisif there is persistent/recurrent diarrhoea, mucus/blood in stool or suspicion of digestive parasites/infection.

Veterinary ultrasoundvery useful in abdominal problems (repeated vomiting, pain, weight loss) and to assess organs and soft tissues.

Veterinary radiologySupport for chest (cough/breathing difficulties), abdomen and some emergencies or chronic processes.

Microscopy and cytologywhen we need to study cells/inflammation/infection (skin, ears, lumps or some internal processes as the case may be).

If the patient requires close control or ongoing treatment (fluid therapy, medication, monitoring), we can rely on veterinary hospitalisation. And if there are co-morbidities that affect the plan (e.g. chronic pain or overweight), we coordinate it with PAIN UNIT y veterinary nutrition.

Frequently asked questions about our veterinary internal medicine service

The veterinary internal medicine is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting internal organs and systems such as digestive, respiratory, urinary, endocrine, immunological, haematological, haematological and other complex processes. This includes, for example, chronic vomiting and diarrhoea, weight loss, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, anaemia, autoimmune diseases or systemic infections.

It is advisable to consult internal medicine when your pet presents with persistent or recurrent symptomssuch as vomiting or diarrhoea lasting several weeks, chronic cough, respiratory distress, unexplained weight loss, increased thirst and urination, episodes of fever, prolonged listlessness or abnormal results in previous blood tests. Also when other treatments have not had the expected response.

Depending on the case, this may include:

  • Blood and urine tests complete

  • Hormone tests and specific profiles

  • Abdominal ultrasound and X-rays

  • Cytology, biopsy or advanced laboratory tests

  • Rapid tests for infectious diseases

The aim is to obtain a patient overview and arrive at an accurate diagnosis before treatment is considered.

In many cases, yes, but in internal medicine, there are diseases multifactorial or highly complex in which the diagnosis may be of high probability rather than 100 definitive %. Even so, with a good combination of clinical history, examination, imaging and laboratory tests, it is often possible to narrowing down the most likely causes and establish an effective management plan.

It depends on the disease. Some pathologies are completely resolve after a specific treatment (infections, acute processes), while others, such as certain renal, endocrine or immune-mediated diseases, require chronic management and regular reviews. At Benivet Benissa we explain the prognosis and the type of follow-up expected in each case.

Your role is crucial. Many internal medicine diseases require:

  • Administering medication at specific times

  • Controlling the diet and access to water

  • Observe and note changes in appetite, weight, behaviour or symptoms.

  • Attending the reviews and control analyses

The joint work between tutor and veterinary team is key to achieve the best result in the medium and long term.
